As we approach Autumn, the beautiful days are still here but without the crazy heat and it’s the start of the official golf season in Spain, which is traditionally a Winter sport. The Costa del Sol, especially around Mijas and East Marbella, is quite famous for its beautiful golf courses that blend challenging play with spectacular views. These areas boast some of the most popular and accessible public courses in the region, but not only that, the climate in the Costa del Sol lends to all year-round golf, especially in the wintertime, where mild temperatures make it very comfortable to play. Below, we have chosen some incredibly popular golf courses that would suit more casual golfers. But be assured, there are many more, including some championship courses, but we will cover those in another post soon.

Golf Courses Around Mijas

1. La Noria Golf (La Cala)
Located in La Cala de Mijas, La Noria offers a friendly 9-hole course that’s perfect for a quick game or practice. It’s an excellent option for beginners or golfers looking for a relaxed round with lovely scenery and well-maintained greens.

2. La Cala Golf (Mijas)
While La Cala Golf is a private club, it offers public access during certain times and is renowned for its three 18-hole courses: America, Europa, and Asia. Each provides a unique challenge set amidst beautiful natural surroundings, with lush landscapes and mountain views. It’s one of the region’s most esteemed golf complexes. 4. Calanova Golf Course
Calanova Golf Club is an 18-hole, par 72 course nestled in the “golf valley” behind La Cala de Mijas on Spain’s Costa del Sol. It is known for its spectacular views of both the Mijas mountains and the Mediterranean Sea from almost every hole. While the terrain is undulating, the wide fairways are designed to be quite flat, avoiding blind shots. The course features large greens and strategically placed bunkers and water hazards. 5. Mijas Golf
Mijas Golf Club, located in the Mijas Golf Valley north of Fuengirola in Málaga, Spain, is a golf course with two 18-hole courses, Los Lagos and Los Olivos. Both courses were designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. Los Lagos was fully rebuilt in 2012 while maintaining its original design. The club has undergone recent renovations to improve its irrigation system, bunkers, drainage, and turf. In addition to the courses, the club offers a restaurant, snack bar, practice areas, and rental services.

Tips for Playing Public Courses in Mijas and East Marbella

  • Book ahead: Especially during busy months, securing your tee time in advance helps avoid disappointment.
  • Check opening hours and any public access restrictions for private clubs that may have limited availability.
  • Bring your gear and comfortable attire—most courses have rentals if needed. Check dress codes ahead of your visit.
  • Enjoy the scenery—these courses are some of the most picturesque in the region, so take your time soaking in the views.
  • Hydrate: make sure you have beverages onboard when you play, particularly in the Summer months. The climate in the Costa del Sol is temperate in the Winter and very warm in the Summer.
